Adapted from my Grandma’s original recipe.

1C. white sugar
3/4 C. Butter
1 egg
1/4 molasses
2 C. flour
2 t. baking soda
1/2 t. cloves
1/2 t. ginger
1/2 t. salt
1 t. cinnamon
Extra sugar for rolling

Combine butter, sugar, molasses and egg in large mixing bowl. Combine flour, baking soda and spices in medium bowl, then add to butter mixture and stir until well combined. Let stand in refrigerator overnight or until dough has hardened. Roll out by hand in 1 inch sized balls. Roll balls in sugar and place on cookie sheet. Press down slightly on cookie dough with the bottom of a glass or jar. Bake for 8-10 minutes in a 375 degree oven. Cool on rack.
